Did Jesus Laugh?

4 Sep

I (Dawn) recently walked by a gathering of godly men at my church. I smiled to watch them interacting, laughing out loud.

It’s just my opinion, but I believe that Jesus laughed with (and perhaps, at) His disciples. How could he not spend time with impulsive Peter without at least a smile. With sanctified imagination, I “see” the One who turned water into wine at the Cana wedding entering into the celebration of His friends. Perhaps He laughed with His mother in the carpenter shop, as one film suggests. And I imagine that Jesus smiled and laughed with the little ones who crawled into His lap.

Jesus understands our sorrows and is acquainted with grief, the Bible says. He enters into our pain. Why would He not also understand what tickles our funny bones? Why would He not enter into our laughter? I think Jesus’ laughter must be the best ever. He loved life, and He will rejoice with us forever in heaven.

Jesus was and is holy, not “holier than thou” with false piety. Though He had a strong sense of mission from the Father, He probaby entered into all sorts of “guy things, including  humor.  Just because people pervert humor, that doesn’t mean it is evil. As long as our laughter is holy, Jesus can join us. So keep it clean, but don’t be afraid to laugh. Do all things to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Can you imagine what it would be like to smile and laugh with Jesus and enjoy His presence forever? What would you like to laugh about with the Lord in heaven someday?
