No Fear Here!

I can’t believe anyone would really buy this! A company called Casket Furniture makes Coffin Coffee Tables! One advertisement for the casket asks, “Why use a casket for just one day ~ get your money’s worth!” Another ad notes, “If the wood lid option is chosen, this full-size coffin can be used as a real burial or cremation coffin. ”

Eeeuuu. I can’t imagine serving popcorn and soda to teenagers, and then burying dear Aunt Matilda a few years later in the same pine box!

CoffinCoffeeTableThis reminds me of a silly joke about a coffin:

Late one dark night a man was walking home alone when he hears a “Bump, Bump, Bump” behind him. Frightened, he walks faster. He looks over his shoulder and sees an upright coffin banging its way down the street toward him … Bump, Bump, Bump.

Now terrified, he begins to run home. The coffin bounces behind him … faster and faster … Bump, Bump, Bump! Scared out of his wits, he runs to the door of his house. He fumbles with his keys, unlocks the door, rushes in, and slams the door, locking it behind him.

Unbelievably, the coffin crashes through the door, with the lid clapping loudly. Clappity-bump, Clappity bump, Clappity BUMP on the heels of the man. He rushes upstairs to the bathroom and locks himself in.  His heart is pounding. His head is reeling. His breathing is labored.

Suddenly, with a loud crash, the coffin starts breaking down the door! BUMP, BUMP, BUMP … CLAPPITY-CLAPPITY BUMP!

The poor man screams and reaches for something heavy… for anything! His hand comes to rest on a large bottle of ROBITUSSIN!

Desperate, the man throws the ROBITUSSIN as hard as he can at the coffin…

I warned you it was silly.

I don’t know about you, but when I read that, my heart started pounding a bit. Have you ever felt your heart pounding so hard, gripped in fear?

The Bible has much to say about fear. We don’t need to fear with the Lord as our refuge (Psalm 27:1). God encourages us to hope in Him and be strong (Psalm 27:14). God’s presence helps us face life’s difficulties without “terror” or being “dismayed” (Isaiah 41:10; see also Hebrews 13:6).

One of my (Dawn’s) favorite scriptures about fear is Isaiah 41:13: “For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear: I will help you.” God’s presence is His enablement. By God’s Spirit, we can receive a spirit of calmness, peace, love (and perfect love casts out fear, 1 John 4:18), and a disciplined mind (see 2 Timothy 1:7).

What in this world causes you the most fear? How have you found victory in that battle? Can you share with us what has worked for you?
