Self-Help or God’s Help?

“I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, “Where is the self-help section?”

“If I tell you,” she said, “it will defeat the purpose.”

I (Dawn) love self-help books, but they must never take the place of God’s help. Self-help can only take us so far, and we need to be careful with them, because some of their advice is more in line with the world’s teachings than the Word of God.

That doesn’t mean that we can’t learn new skills and educate ourselves to thrive in the world around us, but we must never become independent of God, or fail to seek Him for our direction in life. “It is He who has made us; and not we ourselves” ~ we are His sheep; and we must remember that He is God, always and ultimately in control (Psalm 100:3).

One of God’s names is Jehovah Ezer, “The Lord my Help.”  God desires to help us. When we are most afraid ~ whether in a circumstance, or in our own insecurities and fears ~ He reaches out His loving hand to us and says, “I will help you” (Isaiah 41:23; Hebrews 13:6).  He was “our Help in ages past,” and He will be our Help and Hope for years to come.
