Don’t Forget to Remember!

BFIT4GOD License PlateEach week, the Joy Zone team ~ my (Pam’s) office and ministry staff and volunteers ~ gather for prayer and planning. Before we dig in on the tasks, we do two things:  We LOL with God, and then we pray to the God who makes us have something to LOL about!

Recently, Penny and Robin, two on the team, shared this story:

Penny said, ”Robin was going to a ministry event with me, so she drove her car up to the house and we rode together. While  enroute, my son texted me that there was a strange vehicle parked on our country road, so he noted the license plate number in case we needed to call the police. Then, when Robin and I arrived ~  our husbands meeting us at the event ~ my husband asked me if I saw the strange car parked near our driveway.

“I wrote down the license number so we could call the police,” I said. I took the paper and handed it to Robin’s husband Jack, who is a police officer, and said to my husband, “Well. Jack’s the police!”

Jack looked at the license plate number and laughed. It was his wife’s car!

I, of course, laughed, too, and giggled, because if it were my car and you handed me the paper with the plate number, I would have called it in to the police~ because I can’t ever seem to remember my license plate number!

Memories are fickle things.  I think that is why the word “remember” is in the Bible close to 250 times.  God wants us to remember what He has done, so when we get in a jam (or a pickle), we will remember the faithfulness of the One who loves us.  Here are a few things God hopes we remember:

  • Remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth . . .. (Deuteronomy 8:18)
  • Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done, His marvels and the judgments from His mouth. (1 Chronicles 16:12)
  • I shall remember the deeds of the LORD; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. (Psalm 77:11)
  • And they remembered that God was their Rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer. (Psalm 78:35)
  • He has made His wonders to be remembered; The LORD is gracious and compassionate.  (Psalm 111:4)
  • I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your doings; I muse on the work of Your hands. (Psalm 143:5)
  • Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith. (Hebrews 13:7)

To help me remember the goodness and grace of God, I journal~ I try to write something short everyday~ and I make notes in the margin of my Bible and jot answers to prayers in a little notebook. Then, when things get tough, I can pull out those books, thumb through them, and remember that God was there for me then, He will be there for me now.

Try not to be like the card I got for my 50th birthday that read, “We have been through thick and thin, we are the best of friends, we have so much water under the bridge . . . now what was your name again?”

Stroll down memory lane with Jesus today.
