Start Your Day in a Positive Way

23 Aug

A marriage counselor was attempting to find out something about his patient’s attitude by asking her some questions. “Did you wake up grumpy this morning?” he asked.

“No,” replied the woman, “I just let him sleep.” (1)

Alarm Clock - RoosterI (Dawn) read a Japanese cartoon about the difference between a man and woman waking up in the morning and getting ready for work. The alarm goes off at 8:00 a.m. The woman wakes up and brushes her teeth and washes her face. The man scratches an itch on his stomach. A woman puts on toner, moisturizer, and facial cream while the man snores away.

At 8:15 am, the woman puts on sun block while the man snorts a bit and throws a leg out from under the covers. Between 8:17 and 8:35, the woman chooses her clothes, changes clothes, re-chooses clothes, re-changes clothes. She picks the final outfit and changes clothes by 8:40. The man is tossing and turning in bed.

At 8:45, the woman puts on her makeup base, face powder, mascara, eye liner, face blush, and lipstick. Her husband snorts something loudly in his sleep.

As the woman is combing her hair at 8:55, the man bolts up in bed and looks at the clock. While the woman gets her shoes, jewelry, and purse, the man washes his face, brushes his teeth, gets dressed and … 9:00 am … both are ready to go! (2)

Is it like that at your house, if you are married? And if you aren’t married, can you identify with the morning routine a woman must go through to look presentable? It just doesn’t seem fair.

Pam wrote in her most recent book, 52 Ways to Wow Your Husband, “Women’s Health published the results of a commonsense study that revealed that women who greeted their spouse ‘good morning’ as they started their day had better days than those who didn’t. Of those couples who say good morning to each other, 94 percent rate their relationship as excellent. (3) A positive greeting sets an upbeat tone for the entire day.” (4)

Pam wrote that God greets us each morning with hope. “The book of Lamentations proclaims that God’s ‘compassions never fail. They are new every morning’ (Lamentations 3:22-23).”

She added that a wife can reflect God’s love when she gives compassion each morning to the man she loves … but the principle is true in all relationships.

How do you greet the morning? How do you greet others in the morning? How does your morning set you up to share love, joy, and compassion with others all day long?

There are several things you can do to start your day in a positive way. They all begin with the letter “A” ~

  1. Adoration ~ Praise God and thank Him for another day of life. (Whether you think you got enough Wake Up Happysleep or not, you woke up! That’s a blessing!) ~ “…in the morning my prayer comes before you” (Psalm 88:13b)
  2. Appreciation ~ Take a minute as you lie in bed to think of at least three other things you appreciate ~ it doesn’t have to be huge, it can be something simple like a warm/cool house, a pup or kitten snuggling next to you, the fact that you will have water for a shower, or electricity to make a piece of toast. ~ “…give thanks in all circumstances….” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
  3. Affirmation ~ Open the Word of God and find some positive truth to take with you through the day. (A scripture or Christian quote calendar is helpful.)  Start your day with a word of hope or encouragement from God, or a promise you can embrace. ~ “Show me your ways, Lord….” (Psalm 25:4)
  4. Affection ~ If others live in your home, greet them with a “good morning” and/or “I love you.”
  5. Anticipation ~ Commit your day to the Lord, and let Him know you are willing to obey Him in whatever adventure He brings your way. Think of at least one person you can help or serve today with a joyful heart.

There are other things you can do to help launch your day.

  • Certainly you can make healthy, energizing food choices.
  • You might want to exercise, or at least stretch like a cat to get your blood flowing!
  • Take time with the Lord in prayer and Bible reading. Even if you prefer a later Quiet Time, read at least one scripture, or meditate on one you’ve memorized to begin your day.
  • And then, tackle your list. If you have a daily planner, start right away to work your plan. Don’t put off a tough project. Just do it! Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Ask God to show you exactly what He wants you to do … this day!

Comedian Groucho Marx once said, “Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.” (5)

You can make MANY choices to kick off your day with positive attitudes and a purposeful agenda. Are you choosing well?

I do enjoy the manner in which you have presented this situation and it does provide us a lot of fodder for thought. However, from everything that I have personally seen, I just simply wish when other opinions stack on that people continue to be on issue and don’t get started on a tirade associated with some other news du jour. Still, thank you for this exceptional point and even though I can not really agree with the idea in totality, I regard your viewpoint.
