Winning over ‘Wipeouts’

7 Sep

The game show “Wipeout” fascinates me. Each week, 24 contestants battle through four rounds of demanding, hilarious FromWipeoutobstacle courses with out wimping out or wiping out. Their goal is to become “Wipeout Champion.” (The $50,000 grand prize isn’t too shabby, either!)

The enthusiastic players bounce off huge rubber balls, slide off padded platforms, get launched from a “rocket” launcher, duck and dodge various punching elements, land in chilly water or a mud bath – and generally pant their way across each course, exhausted but happy.

My husband and I watch with an occasional “Ooooh” and “Ouch,” but are always amazed to see the contestants get up again and again. They are determined to win, no matter how many times they get knocked down.

We can’t help laughing, but we always admire the gutsy winners. It’s been said, “Perseverance pays,” and indeed, patience and perseverance can overcome the greatest difficulties.

The apostle Paul had something to say about that:

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light” (Colossians 1:11-12, ESV). That words “endurance” is also interpreted “perseverance.”

There’s something to be said for the Christian who endures, the child of God who stands strong against temptation, persisting and laboring faithfully for the Kingdom of God.

Our enemy, Satan, would like us to experience not only burnout, but wipeout; but God’s strength enables us to champion over the enemy’s strategies to defeat us.

When I watch the “Wipeout” contestants win, they’re usually jumping up and down with joy. Notice, Paul says our endurance is one victory that results in joy! But more than that, the “contest” is all about joy. Remember that Jesus, for the joy set before Him, endured the cross (Hebrews 12:1-2); and He can enable us to endure our “crosses” with joy too. We can rejoice in our sufferings, knowing “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character…” (Romans 5:2-5; James 1:2-4, 12).

Paul tells us not to grow weary in doing good, because we will “reap,” if we don’t give up (Galatians 6:9). We take up the Armor of God to “keep alert with all perseverance” (Ephesians 6:16-19).

You may not be competing on a game show, but you are in some kind of trial, sooner or later. Keep your eyes on the prize and remain  steadfast, running your race with “endurance” (1 Corinthians 9:24; 2 Thessalonians 3:5; 1 Timothy 6:11-12).

Remember:  You can win over life’s “Wipeouts” – in Christ.

How has God helped you in your biggest potential wipeouts in life? Give Him praise today!
